Answer engine optimization for home services contractors
The water heater goes, and nobody opens a search engine first any more. They ask, and something answers with a few names. Answer engine optimization for a contractor is the work of being one of those names — before anyone compares reviews, and before anyone clicks anything.
An answer has about four names in it
A search page lists dozens and lets the customer sort it out. An answer does the sorting for them and hands back a short list. Being on that list is the whole competition now, and it is a different race from ranking — you can hold the top search position for your trade and your city and never be named in the answer.
Nobody who is left off is told. There is no ranking report for an answer, no notification, and no trace that the question was ever asked.
We publish dated runs of this exact question rather than describing it — the questions as we asked them, every company named, and the sources behind each answer. The West Palm Beach electricians run is here, and the rest are here. No company commissioned them and none was a client.
Two things decided it, and neither was the website
What other sites said about them. An assistant leans on sources it already trusts rather than on your own marketing copy. A contractor described consistently across the places a machine already reads is a contractor it can name without risk.
Whether a machine could tell one company from another with a similar name. In home services this is routine — two companies in one metro sharing most of a name, an old address still live on a profile nobody logs into, a second phone number from a campaign years ago. Each near-duplicate splits the evidence, and half the evidence convinces nobody.
Being first in a list of links and being named in an answer are decided differently. You can hold the top search position and never be named.
Run it on your trade and your city
Ask an assistant who to call for your trade in your city, the way a customer in a hurry would ask it. Write down every company named. Then ask the urgent version — “my AC just died, who can come today” — because urgency changes the answer and that is the one that converts.
Questions people ask
What is answer engine optimization for contractors?
It is the work of getting your business named in the answers AI assistants give when somebody asks who to call for your trade in your area, rather than only ranking in a list of links. An answer names a handful of companies, so you are in it or you are not.
How many contractors does an AI answer name?
A few each time, and the list shifts with the wording of the question. Very few companies hold every version of it. Our published runs record which names came back for each question, so the spread can be checked rather than taken on trust.
Does ranking first on Google mean AI will recommend my company?
No. Ranking and being named in an answer are decided differently, and a contractor can hold the top search position without appearing in the answer at all.
Why would an assistant miss my company?
Most often because it cannot resolve you confidently. An old address still live on a profile, a second phone number from an old campaign, or another company in the same metro with a similar name will each split the evidence about you, and a half-resolved business is a risky one to name.
