Straight answer

Is AI search visibility worth
the investment?

Sometimes. It depends on whether your buyers are asking assistants at all. And most of what gets sold as “AI search visibility” is a tool you do not need yet.

The evidence

What actually changed.

Ahrefs analyzed 300,000 keywords and found AI Overviews correlated with a 34.5% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page.

Pew Research found that when a Google AI summary appeared, people clicked a traditional search result in only 8% of visits, against nearly 15% when no summary appeared.

BrightLocal found 40% of consumers actively use generative AI when searching online.

Position one still exists. Fewer people arrive at it. That is the whole of the change, and it is the only reason any of this matters.

Definition

What AI search visibility actually is.

AI search visibility — also called AI SEO, AEO or answer engine optimization — is the work of getting named in the answer an assistant gives, rather than only ranked in the list beneath it.

In practice that is six things: the website and entity signals fixed, the evidence created, authoritative mentions and backlinks earned, editorial, podcast and partnership opportunities secured, the changing answers monitored, and visibility improved month after month.

None of those is a subscription. That is the part the tool market would rather you did not notice.

Be honest

When it is not worth it.

If nobody is asking an assistant about your category yet, it is not worth it. Go and check before you spend: ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the questions your buyers would ask, and see whether any company is named at all.

If your website does not yet say plainly what you do, where you are and how to reach you, that is the job, not AI search visibility. An assistant cannot name a business it cannot identify.

And if someone is selling you a tracking dashboard before you have fixed either of those, you are buying a measurement of a problem instead of the fix.

Do this first

Before you buy anything.

Ask the ten questions a buyer in your category would ask. Write down which companies get named and which pages the assistant cites. That list is your actual competition and your actual to-do list, and it costs nothing to produce.

Then fix what it shows you: the pages that answer those questions directly, the directories those citations come from, the written reviews that make you look real.

We run exactly that check for our own business every month and publish the result, including the months it says we are not named.

Questions

What owners ask us.

Is AI search visibility worth the investment?

It depends on whether buyers in your category are asking assistants at all. Pew Research found people clicked a traditional search result in only 8% of visits when a Google AI summary appeared, against nearly 15% without one, and BrightLocal found 40% of consumers actively use generative AI when searching. If that is where your buyers are, being absent from the answer costs more than any tool. If it is not, it is not worth it yet.

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility, also called AI Engine Optimization, is the work of getting a business named in the answers AI assistants give, rather than only ranking in a list of blue links. It covers fixing website and entity signals, creating evidence, earning authoritative mentions and backlinks, securing editorial and partnership opportunities, monitoring changing answers and improving visibility over time.

Do I need an AI search visibility tool?

Not to start. Ask the questions your buyers would ask in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and write down which companies get named and which pages get cited. That costs nothing and tells you more than a dashboard will. Buy tracking once you have something to track.

How is AI search visibility different from traditional search ranking?

Traditional search ranking competes for a position in a list. AI search visibility competes to be named in the answer above that list. Ahrefs analyzed 300,000 keywords and found AI Overviews correlated with a 34.5% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page, which is why the two are no longer the same job.
