AI visibility

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is the work of getting your business named in the answers AI assistants give, rather than only ranking in a list of links. It is also called AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization. When somebody asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI who to hire in your trade and your town, either your business is in the answer or it is not. And there is no second page to be on.

The short answer

An assistant does not hand you a ranked list. It assembles one answer out of what it can find, read and verify about the businesses in your category, and it names a handful of them. AI search visibility is everything that decides whether you are one of the handful.

That splits into two questions, and most businesses have never checked either. Can the machine read you — are its crawlers allowed in, do your pages say unambiguously who and where you are. And does it have a reason to name you — is there evidence about you, on sites it already trusts, that it can quote.

What the work actually consists of

Five areas. The first is cheap and nearly always wrong somewhere; the rest are slow and there is no shortcut that survives contact with a real index.

1

Website and entity signals

Making the machine-readable facts about your business agree with each other: who you are, where you are, what you sell, and one address spelled one way everywhere.

2

Evidence worth citing

Pages that answer a real question with something checkable. An assistant quotes what it can verify, and a brochure gives it nothing to quote.

3

Authoritative mentions and links

Being named on sites an assistant already trusts. This is the slow part and there is no shortcut that survives contact with a real index.

4

Editorial and partnership placement

Getting into the roundups, directories and lists that assistants read when they assemble a recommendation in your trade.

5

Monitoring the answers

The answers change without warning and nothing notifies you. Asking the same questions on a schedule is the only way to see movement.

It is not the same job as ranking

1

Ranking competes for a position. Visibility competes to be named.

Traditional SEO fights for a place in a list of links. AI search visibility fights to be named in the answer printed above that list, which is often the only thing a buyer reads.

2

The click is going away from the list.

Ahrefs analysed 300,000 keywords and found AI Overviews correlated with a 34.5% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page. Being first in the list is worth measurably less than it was.

3

People stop clicking when there is a summary.

Pew Research found people clicked a traditional search result in only 8% of visits when a Google AI summary appeared, against nearly 15% without one.

4

Buyers are already asking.

BrightLocal found 40% of consumers actively use generative AI when searching. Whether that includes your buyers is the question worth answering before you spend anything.

Which is why a business can hold the first result in Google and still be absent from the answer printed above it. We wrote up a real test of exactly that on a West Palm Beach electrician: how we ran it, start to finish.

How to tell where you stand, in about ten minutes, for nothing

You do not need a tool or a consultant to find your starting position. You need the questions your buyers ask and somewhere to write the answers down.

1

Ask the question your buyer would ask

Open ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google and type the question a customer would actually type: best plumber in your town, who should I call for emergency AC in your city. Use your trade and your area, not your company name.

2

Write down every company it names

The names it gives back are your real competitors for that answer, whatever you believed about who they are. If you are not among them, that is your starting position, measured.

3

Now ask about you, by name

Ask what it knows about your company. Check the trade, the town and the address it gives back. A confident answer about the wrong business is more expensive than no answer at all.

4

Read the pages it cites

Whatever it links is what it trusts in your category. Those pages are the shortlist of places worth being named in, and you did not have to guess at them.

5

Put the date in your calendar and do it again

The answers move. One reading is an anecdote; the same five questions a month later is the first thing you have that behaves like a measurement.

If you would rather not run it yourself, we do that as a free report: five buying questions — best, emergency, most trusted, best-reviewed, and who should I call — put through a live web search, one search per question, with the actual companies that came back for each one and whether yours was among them. Get my free report.

The readable half, you can check yourself right now

Whether a machine can read you is testable in seconds, and these are free with no sign-up. They will not tell you whether an assistant likes you, only whether it can see you at all, which is the floor.

And if you want the longer version of the first question: how to get recommended by ChatGPT, or whether AI is describing your business correctly.

What this does not do

1

None of this makes you the best answer

It makes you a findable, unambiguous candidate. If your reviews are thin and nobody has written about you, being readable does not win the recommendation.

2

There is no switch and no appeal

No assistant has a form for being included, and nobody at any of these companies will take your call about it. You change what they can read about you and wait.

3

Expect weeks, not days

Indexes refresh on their own schedule. Anyone promising a result this month is selling you the schedule, which is not theirs to sell.

4

Some of it will not matter to you

If your buyers are not asking assistants yet, this is a thing to understand now and act on later. The five-question check above is how you find out which you are.

What owners ask about this

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility, also called AI Engine Optimization, is the work of getting a business named in the answers AI assistants give, rather than only ranking in a list of blue links. It covers fixing website and entity signals, creating evidence, earning authoritative mentions and backlinks, securing editorial and partnership opportunities, monitoring changing answers and improving visibility over time.

How is AI search visibility different from traditional search ranking?

Traditional search ranking competes for a position in a list. AI search visibility competes to be named in the answer above that list. Ahrefs analyzed 300,000 keywords and found AI Overviews correlated with a 34.5% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page, which is why the two are no longer the same job.

Do I need an AI search visibility tool?

Not to start. Ask the questions your buyers would ask in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and write down which companies get named and which pages get cited. That costs nothing and tells you more than a dashboard will. Buy tracking once you have something to track.

Is AI search visibility the same thing as AEO or Answer Engine Optimization?

Yes. AI search visibility, AEO and Answer Engine Optimization all describe the same job: being named in the answer an assistant gives, rather than only appearing in a list of links. Generative Engine Optimization is another name for it. The labels differ by who is selling; the work does not.

Does AI search visibility replace SEO?

No, and anyone saying so is overselling. Google's AI Overviews are assembled from Google's own index, so the work that gets you indexed still matters. What has changed is that being indexed is no longer enough on its own, because the answer above the list is assembled rather than ranked.

How do I tell whether my business is already visible?

Ask an assistant the question a buyer would ask in your trade and your area, and write down which companies it names. If you are not one of them, you have your answer in about a minute, and the companies it did name are your real competition for that question.

How long does AI search visibility take?

Weeks rather than days, and longer in a crowded category. Assistants read from indexes that refresh on their own schedule, so a change you publish today is not visible until those indexes are re-read. Anyone quoting you a date is quoting a schedule that is not theirs to set.

Findable is the floor. Being named is the job.

The free checks above settle whether a machine can read you. What it says about you afterwards is the part that takes work, and it is the part we do.
